I already knew some sobering facts about Europe. There are 19 countries with an evangelical population of 2% or less. There are over 250,000 cities, towns, and villages with no gospel witness whatsoever. But I just recently found out some more disturbing statistics about Germany from Sharon Reeves, AG missionary in Rostock.
"The occult and esoteric continues to grow here in Germany. Where the church fails to meet spiritual needs in a society, the sellers of "secret knowledge" will prevail. There are more than 90,000 registered wizards and fortunetellers in Germany, twice the number of all registered priests, pastors and ministers. Here is the actual statistical breakdown:
a.. Clairvoyants.....90,000 ...........Lutheran ministers.......25,000
b.. Mystic healers...10,000 ..........Catholic priests............13,000
c.. Star gazers........6,000 ...........Evangelical pastors........2,000

Many Lutheran Priests have trouble with central truths of Christian faith. According to an article in ideaSpektrum, a publication from the German Lutheran Church, only one out of four priests believe in the physical resurrection of Christ. Just 52% recognize the need for salvation from sin and 21% view Jesus only as an important role model. If demographics continue as they are today, the German Lutherans will be a minority and the Islamic immigrants will be the majority within 100 years."
Unbelievable considering this is the land of Martin Luther and the Moravians from Herrnhut. Europe is in desperate need of revival. Thanks for helping to "Build the Kingdom" in Central Europe!
